Do You Know Me ?


- I was born on March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan. I am one of nine children and mildly dyslexic.

- I began my pro hockey career in 1946 with the Detroit Red Wings and wore #17. I later switched my more famous to #9.

- They named a special hat trick after me: a goal, an assist and a fight.

- I was a good fighter and loved it, until my coach, Jack Adams asked, "I know you can fight. Now can you show me you can play hockey?"

- I was known for elbowing opponents when we went into the corners.

- I was a member of Detroit's famous "Production Line" of Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel and me in the 1950s.

- I scored 801 NHL and 174 WHA and 98 playoff goals in my career. I was the first player to ever score 1000 total goals (NHL + WHA + playoffs).

- I played in a hockey game for the IHL Detroit Vipers in 1997 at age 69 years old.

- I was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.

- I was part of the Red Wings Stanley Cup Champions in 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955.

- I am known throughout the world as "Mr. Hockey".
