Surf's Up Dude

29-27 Spartans Lose To Central Mich... Boo!

How does a Big Ten team get beat by Central Michigan?

The Chips missed a 2pt conversion with 32 ticks left and then recovered their onside kick. They effortlessly moved into FG range- getting 5 yards closer thanks to a stupid Spartan penalty (that gave them another try after they missed the FG the first time) and kicked it through the uprights for a huge upset win.

Coach Dantonio must have gone crazy after the game!!!

But Spartans had no real running game and played a "sieve-like" defense. Unless we put Montana State on the schedule for six or seven more games it could be a long depressing season.

Apollo 14 Landing Site

Science instruments (circled left) and the lunar module lower stage (circled right) are connected by a footprint trail.

To all the folks who thought the moon landings were filmed in a back lot in the Arizona desert... I told you so. A recent photo of the site (above) shows that everything is still there. This also puts to rest that aliens live on the moon and were checking out the landing sight, too--- notice there is only one set of footprints.
The BBC article states that all landing sites- except for Apollo 12 have been oveflown and photographed. Here's the link if you are interested in learning more:

Watson Leads British Open

It's been many years since I've followed professional golf. I did go out to watch one round of the Buick Open at Torrey Pines a few years ago, but I've not been keeping up with the PGA golf scene. Until now.

Seeing 59 year old Tom Watson leading after two rounds of the British Open at Turnberry makes for an exciting story. He's won five Opens and could win his biggest yet with a win this weekend. He would displace Julius Boros (48 years old in the 1968 PGA Championship) as the oldest golfer to win a major golf tournament (Masters, US Open, British Open or PGA).

Tiger Woods missed the cut.

Independence Day

Happy Birthday USA.

Remember why they stood tall and fought Great Britain so hard 233 years ago... it was for Freedom.

Norman Rockwell showed us the "Four Freedoms" in 1943 that were inspired by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt:

Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Worship

Freedom From Want

Freedom From Fear

God Bless America:
Now and in the Future.

Happy Fourth of July

American Independence Day. How different might it have been if the American Revolution would take place today instead of 233 years ago. Perhaps with the technologies of today England would have beaten down the revolution. With today's tanks, missiles, airplanes available, England would have access to all of these and the colonists would not. The small arms available today would not be a match for the firepower of an Imperialist country like England.

But it all happened long ago, none of the modern tech stuff was available and the British were more concerned with their war with France than our little colonial revolt... thus... we won our independence.

Happy Birthday U.S.A.

Murphy's Law

A funny thing happened after washing the car... it rained! Doesn't that figure? Rain at the tail end of June is a rarity in Southern California. Sure it only spit a little on the windshield... but at least it was rain.

My 2004 Scion xA... What-a-car

What a nice surprise this little car has turned out to be. I have now owned it for six years (Bought in July 2003) and mine was one of the first sold in Southern California... it hit the rest of the USA in 2004. Now it's finally time for a tuneup. I took it down to Midas to get a new set of brakes (second time they are being replaced- first tires and brakes were at 44,000--- I had new tires put on a month ago).

Today I also added 4 new sparkplugs (tuneup), a new battery and two belts. Seems like the old steed is staying pretty strong. I look forward to some more good driving and taking it past 100,000 miles soon. Getting 31 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway... take that Big Oil!

The only other cars we have taken over 100,000 were our 1996 Ford Escort Wagon (a great car) and Gary's 1996 Honda Civic- which is still running strong.

Odometer reads: 88,966.

Ten Daily Things

Ten Small Things That Can Make a Difference:

1- Take a walk. Even better if you walk to a market or store and save a car trip. Good for your health, good way to meet neighbors or make friends and good for your mental health and well being. Google "benefits of a daily walk".

2- Don't litter AND pick up three pieces of trash- every day. Good for your city and good for the environment. Be responsible and help clean up the mess by doing your part.

3- Listen to music every day. Learn to play an instrument or sing. Good for your mental sharpness and well being. Even a harmonica or singing in the shower counts. "Sing to the Lord a joyful song".

4- Develop a skill or hobby. This can be fun and add joy to your life. Even better if it doesn't cost much or it's art you can sell or give away as gifts.

5- Recycle, Re-use, Re-gift, Donate. Try not to throw things away into a landfill if someone else can use it. Garage sale, swap meet, free cycle, salvation army, thrift shops.

6. Shop locally and patronize at least one local merchant. By keeping money in your community insures local employment and keep businesses viable.

7. Drive less. Consciously decide to limit your car travel by grouping your trips. Example: instead of making a trip today to drop off dry cleaning, combine it with a trip to the post office and buying milk tomorrow. Get smart with your car trips. Good for your wallet, good for the air, good for the long haul of our country.

8. Get some culture. Visit a museum or zoo. Attend a play, music festival or symphony. Opera anyone? Expand your world view and mind... even better if they are local within your city.

9. Volunteer and support a charity or "cause". It could be a soup kitchen, neighborhood group, local food drive, walking in a cancer walk, an old age home, boy scouts. Join an organization to help out. Get out of the house, unplug, turn off the tube. Explore the possibilities.

10. Attend worship services. Don't let God take a backseat in your life. America was founded in 1776 on Judeo-Christian values, principles and beliefs... (read the Declaration of Independence and Constitution) ... so don't let society and our government push God out of your life.

These are all things that are good for you, good for others or good for the environment. It doesn't take lots of money or time. Small things can add up to make big differences.

Welcome to the Periodic Table--- Element 112

Although it doesn't have an "official name" Element 112 has been discovered. Ununbium... (which means 112 in latin?) it is a heavy metal that has a lifespan of about 30 seconds. How about calling it Matthewmium?

Ununbium (pronounced /juːˈnʌnbiəm/;[1] officially, it is a temporary IUPAC systematic element name for a chemical element in the periodic table that has the temporary symbol Uub and the atomic number 112.

Element 112 is the latest superheavy element to be officially recognised by IUPAC (see Official discovery). The most stable isotope discovered to date is 285112 with a half-life of ~30 s. In total, about 75 atoms of ununbium have been detected using various nuclear reactions.[3] An unconfirmed isotope, 285b112, has a possible half-life of ~9 minutes, and would be one of the longest-lived superheavy isotopes known to date.

Recent experiments strongly suggest that element 112 behaves as a typical member of group 12, demonstrating properties consistent with a volatile metal.

Take a Flying Leap...

I wouldn't jump out of a plane... not at 18, 25 or 40 and certainly not at 85 like President George Herbert Walker Bush did recently. Bush has gone skydiving for his 75th and 80th birthdays as well and expects to do the same when he turns 90. Bush jumped from 10,500 feet and is pictured here traveling over 100 mph in freefall. He is tandem jumping with Mike Elliott of the Army's Golden Knights.

Bush has jumped out of a plane seven times. His first was when his Navy plane was shot down during World War II over the Pacific Ocean in 1944. He bailed out at 1,500 feet after a bombing mission but the rest of his crew didn't make it.

Truly--- George Bush I is a man's man.

I wonder what I will do to celebrate my 50th birthday this year? Certainly nothing as dramatic as this.

It's Over... All Hail the Champion Penguins

It was a stunning finish to the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. Pittsburgh overcame being down two games to none to best the Red Wings 2-1 in the seventh game and win Lord Stanley's Cup. An unlikely hero (meaning not one of Pitt's golden boys Crosby or Malkin), Maxime Talbot turned in a stellar performance and scored both of the Penguin goals.

So it's wait until next year for our Detroit Red Wings. It might be a completely different come training camp. Question marks include whether Marian Hossa signs a long term contract with the Wings. If so it may mean the exit of several Wings who will become free agents in the of season. Mikael Samuelsson and Jiri Hudler among others might be forced off the team due to the salary cap.

It is certain that ageless defenseman Chris Chelios will be gone. At 47 he might consider retirement if not offered a contract by another NHL team.

So let's heal up Red Wings... training camp is just around the corner.

Game Seven Is For All The Marbles

I just picked up Erin from school and we're all getting revved up for the finals this evening. Pittsburgh @ Detroit starting at 5 pm PDT. Winner takes home the Stanley Cup.

It'll Go to Game Seven

Well it's back to Hockeytown for the ... winner takes it all... game seven.

Detroit played a good third period after seeming to sleepwalk through the first two periods. The puck took a few tough bounces and it was 2-1 at the final horn. I find it interesting though that the Penguins didn't get any penalties called on them until after they had gotten ahead 2-0. It took blatant infractions to actually get the refs to find their whistles.

The Wings took two penalties...One that I didn't understand was when Zetterberg got called for goalie interference after getting cross checked over the net by the Penguins. He gets sent to the box for two minutes. Wings had a good penalty kill when they needed it- but they never seemed to find the fire until Draper scored in the third period to close the deficit to 2-1.

See you on Friday for the Stanley Cup .

Playoff Beards

ZZ Top with maybe the first playoff beards. "Go Red Wings" they seem to be singing.

Dats Good--- one game to go.

Pavel Datsyuk gave the Red Wings the shot in the arm they needed. Coming in after missing the first four games of the finals, #13 put on quite a show. He set up the first goal, tossing a perfect pass to Daniel Cleary who shot the puck through a defenseman's legs and past Penguin goalkeeper Fluery.

Filppula scored the second with assists from Hossa and the Wings goalie Chris Osgood. Then Pittsburgh went on a penalty spree and the wings strung together three successive power play goals to drain all the life out of the Penguins.

Final: Wings 5 Penguins 0

My Three Stars:
1- Pavel Datsyuk (2 assists)
2- Hank Zetterberg (1 goal, 1 assist)
3- Chris Osgood (22 saves, shutout, 1 assist)

What's Ahead: 15 down and one more win to go to bring home the Stanley Cup. It would be nice if the Wings win in Pittsburgh so Hossa can hoist the Cup and skate around Mellon Arena... in a Red Wing uniform!

Even Steven

The Penguins evened up the Stanley Cup Finals at 2-2 by humiliating the Red wings 4-2. The Penguins totally outplayed the Red Wings, who looked old and tired. The Wings looked out of sorts and bored with what they were doing. They missed passes, tossed the puck around and turned it over and were in one word "outplayed".

So it's now a 3 game series. With the next game in Hockeytown on Saturday Night.

Refs Help Pens Beat Wings

The referees suddenly found their whistles when it looked like the NHLs "Golden Girls" were going to go down 3-0. Once the Wings went ahead 2-1 the zebras pulled out their whistles to even up the score. Funny how the three blind mice somehow missed 21 seconds of "too many men on the ice" by the Penguins.

So it's 2-1 with the next game slated for Thursday night in Pissburgh.

Coming Up On Versus

Tonight is game 3. The Wings will continue to skate without their leading scorer, Pavel Datsuyk, who remains out with a bruised foot. I bet it's broken and they just don't want to say it. For as well as Detroit is playing, I wonder how much better they skate if Dats is on the ice?

Kris Draper is listed as healthy- but still might not play. Helms, Abdelkader and Leino are playing pretty well in Draper's absence.

Go Red Wings.

Ozzie- Ozzie- Ozzie

The Wings went up two games to zip with a hard fought 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh. Behind some stellar net minding by their unsung goalie. The Red Wings trailed 1-0 in the first period on a powerplay goal by Evgeni Malkin. Detroit came back with two goals in the second period scored by Jonathan Ericsson and Valtteri Filppula.

Osgood and Hank Zetterberg continued to frustrate Cindy Crysby and held him pointless for the second straight game. Justin Abdelkader (MSU Spartan from Muskegon, MI) added a third goal at the beginning of the third period.

Tempers boiled over near the end of the game. Malkin lost his cool with Zetterberg in Detroit goal crease. Osgood had made another big save and Max Talbot speared him after the whistle. Zetterberg popped him in the chin and then Malkin and Zetterberg squared off for a little fight club action.

Next game is Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena. It will be the third game in four days. No rest for the wicked.

Winged Wheels Keep Rolling

The defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Detroit Red Wings, took it to the Penguins tonight. They outhit, outskated and outscored Pittsburgh's Penguins to the tune of a 3-1 beating. Chris Osgood was great between the red pipes- stopping 31 of 32 shots and was correctly named the #1 star of the night. Wings goals came from Stuart, Franzen and Abdelkader. It was nice to see a Michigan State Alum (Abdelkader) score the first playoff goal of his career- and to think it happened in the Cup finals. It was a big goal and gave the Wings a two goal lead... truly it was the gaol that broke the Steel City's back.

In spite of all the hype Marian Hossa stepped up and played a fine game. For the record, Hossa was fired up and led the team with 3 Shots on Goal. He missed an wide open empty net goal in the last two minutes- and I am sure he's kicking himself for missing that one. But he wasn't the only one who played a great game. So did Cindy Crysby's shadow, Henrik Zetterberg. Big Z was all over Crosby--- all game long. His big time defense and strong forechecking was critical to this victory.

Kudos to the Red Wings #4 line of Matlby, Lieno and Abdelkader. They ended up taking lots of shifts near the end of the game.. Their fresh legs and the fire in their bellies frustrated Pittsburgh to no end. The real value of the fourth lines extra minutes will most likely show up late in the game tomorrow night.

So hang on to your hockey pucks... game two begins in less than 24 hours. It's the first time since 1955 that game 1 and 2 will be played without a day off in between them. Detroit takes a one game to none lead in a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup Finals.

Wings Win 2-1 in Overtime... Heading to the Finals

Darren Helm to the rescue. With the score 1-1 after regulation time, the Red Wings came out firing in the overtime period and #43 Darren Helm, rammed home a rebound at 3:58 to send Detroit to the Stanley Cup Finals. It will be a rematch of last year's Cup Finals where they'll meet the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and Sunday at the Joe Louis Arena in Hockeytown U.S.A.

War on Terror

I found these online after listening to a podcast on propaganda. The U.S. Government used it's influence during WW2 to save fuel and win the war.

But like this second poster shows... why not for the "War on Terror" as well?

Movie Review: House (R)

I watched this movie instantly on "Netflix". It was one of the scarier movies that I've seen in quite a while. A young couple gets diverted down a dirt road and after having car trouble is forced to stay in the Wayside Inn or the "HOUSE". Bizarre and horrible things happen to them both psychologically and physically. I gave it five stars. The movie was base around a book written by Frank Peretti. Rated: R (for some violence and lots of terror).

American Royalty

You thought it was going to be about the Kennedy family, didn't you? Well America's royalty really resides in our nine Supreme Court Justices. Their constitutional job is to apply (or interpret) the laws of our country. They are selected (not elected) for life by the ruling President, decide the law of the land and are literally immune from the responsibility of their group consensus decisions. Their decisions do in fact remain in effect long after their bones have turned to dust in the earth. Pretty powerful for someone who never got voted into office wouldn't you say?

This morning President Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to replace the retiring David Souter. She would be the third woman (Ronald Reagan appointed the first woman, Sandra Day O'Connor and Bill Clinton the second Ruth Bader Ginsburg) and first Hispanic selected to the high court. George W. Bush appointed two justices, John Robert and Samuel Alito during his eight years in office.

Wings Roar to 6-1 Win

The Detroit Red Wings shook off their OT loss on Friday night to record a 6-1 thumping of the Blackhawks. Getting the news before the game that Kris Draper, Pavel Datsuyk and Captain Nick Lidstrom were not going to be suiting up, I felt a knot in my stomach.

But fear not. Marian Hossa shocked the Hawks with a short handed goal in the opening period and the route was on. Chicago was feeling the heat later in the game. Trailing 4-1 they lost all composure and took a slew of penalties to make it easy for the Motowners to play keep away. Every whistle in the third period yielded a scrum, with Chicago's thugs trying to get the mild mannered Wings to take the bait, drop the gloves and fight. Mike Babcock's boys just smiled and skated away--- letting the Blackhawk perpetrator head to the penalty box by himself.

The teams get two days off before playing game #5 in Detroit. The Wings can clinch the Western Division Championship with a win on Wednesday at home.

Do the Shut-tle

Atlantis landed safely at Edwards AFB in California's Mojave desert and capped a thirteen day mission that upgraded the Hubble telescope to extend it's lifespan. New parts and batteries extended the capability of the 19 year old orbiting telescope that was named after legendary American astronomer Edwin Hubble. The repairs are expected to keep Hubble up and running until at least 2014.

You Decide

The Wings took it on the chin on Friday night, 4-3 to the Blackhawks in overtime. Part of the controversy was the 25 minutes in penalties dished out to the usually clean handed Red Wings in the first period. The majority were from a devastatingly hard hit by Nicklas Kronwall on the Hawks Martin Havlat.

Did you watch the game and see it?

Was it a "clean hit"? Most Red Wing fans say heck yes! The Hawks say differently.

What do you say?

Get ready for more hockey excitement in game 4 today from Chicago at 12:00pm PDST. The Red Wings lead this series 2 games to 1.

Sammy Turns on the Light - - - Wings Win in O.T.

Wings 3 Hawks 2 (OT)

Mikael Samuelsson scores the game winner for Detroit. A turnover by the Black Hawks at the Detroit blue line led to a 3-on-1 breakaway and it was boom-boom-boom. Two crisp passes (Hudler to Filpulla to Samuelsson) and Sammy's one timer to send Detroit to a 2-0 lead in this Western Conference Championship. Lots of good skating, stick handling and old time hockey. They head to Chicago for game 3 on Friday Night.

To heck with the hockey channel and their so-called "experts"... These are My Three Stars:

1- Mikael Samuelsson- Detroit, game winner.

2- Chris Osgood- Detroit, 37 saves.

3- Jonathan Toews- Chicago, two goals.

Osgood is unsung and under appreciated by the hockey media. He has been rock solid between the pipes for the Red Wings so far.

Whoooooosh

That was the sound of Red Wing ice skates and pucks hitting the net. Detroit goes up 1-0 in the best of seven Western Conference Championships against the Chicago Black Hawks. In what turned out to be a free wheeling wide open game, the Red Wings behind some exceptional goal tending by Chris Osgood won going away 5-2. Ossie was a rock solid netminder and came up big against a young and aggressive Black Hawks team. Daniel Cleary scored twice to pace a Red Wing offense that took 42 shots on goal against Nikolai Khabibulin. Chicago is finding it is tough to beat the defending Stanley Cup Champions on their home ice.

new weight bench

BMO was asking me about how he could workout this summer. We looked into health clubs and laughed at their high monthly fees... no way was my answer. So we checked around and picked up a versatile wt bench from Walmart and a 160# set of wts from Sears and .... can you say home gym? For the price of four months gym membership we converted a portion of garage into the "Big O Fitness Center".

On to the Next!

This is what you get when you're trying to watch NHL hockey out here in California. Sorry the game is not available on any channel.

Wings 4 Ducks 3

With their backs to the wall after a lackluster loss on Tuesday, the red Wings fought the good fight and vanquished the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4-3. With three minutes remaining in the game, Daniel Cleary knocked in a goal with assists from Zetterberg and Lidstrom to give the Wings the lead which Chris Osgood and company held for thwe win.

It does sucks being out here in California in one respect. Sure the temperatures today were a balmy 75 degrees and it was nice and sunny... But even though the Ducks played in the game, channel 31 (Fox Sports) carried Women's mixed martial arts and Versus covered Two unknown boxers. I followed the game on Yahoo sports online. The Wings won the game while I was downstairs cooking dinner.

It will be "Original Six" action as the Red Wings faceoff against the Chicago Black Hawks in the conference finals.

Wings Win Game 5

Domination.

I watched the game on the Ducks station out here in SD... Fox 31. The announcers tried to verbally rally the Ducks viewing audience but it was clear to anyone with any knowledge of hockey that the Red Wings totally dominated Anaheim today 4-1. Juri Hudler slapped in a waist high rebound for what proved to be the game winner.

Question of the day: Does Anaheim replace Jonas Hiller with Jean-Sebastien Giguere in the nets for game 6?

The Detroiters lead the best of seven series 3-2, with the next game on Tuesday in California at 7 pm PDST. Photo credit to Detroit Free Presses KIRTHMON F. DOZIER.

Steve Blass Diesase

In a 10-year career, Blass posted a 103-76 record with 896 strikeouts and a 3.63 ERA in 1597 innings pitched.

Blass is best known for his sudden and inexplicable loss of control after the 1972 season. His ERA climbed to 9.81 in the 1973 season. He walked 84 batters in 88 innings, and struck out only 27. Blass suffered through the 1973 season, then spent most of 1974 in the minor leagues. He gave it one last try in spring training of 1975. Failing to regain his form, he retired from baseball in March 1975.

Thereafter, a condition referred to as "Steve Blass Disease" became a part of baseball lexicon because such a change in a player's skill was identified with him. The diagnosis is applied to talented players who inexplicably and permanently seem to lose their ability to accurately throw a baseball. In Blass's case, the sudden death of teammate and friend Roberto Clemente in a plane crash has often been considered a catalyst for Blass's sudden decline in 1973, as a way of survivor guilt even though Blass was not on the plane with Clemente.

- from Wikipedia

Players who have been said to be afflicted with Steve Blass Disease are: P Rick Ankiel (now an OF), P Oliver Perez and 2B Chuck Knoblauch. A possible case is the Detroit Tigers pitcher, Dontrell (D-Train) Willis, who is currently coming back after being diagnosed with "anxiety disorder".

Wings 6 Ducks 3

It was tough listening to the Ducks pissing and moaning about the rough style of play and the hits the Red Wings have been dishing out. The Ducks cried even after their 2-1 win. Well... it was good to see Detroit power back with a gritty 6-3 victory over the cry babies... proving once and for all... there is no whining in Hockey!

Robbed by the Zebras

The Red Wings got robbed and the Ducks sleazed out a game 3 win over Detroit 2-1. Marion Hossa poked a loose puck into the net but it was disallowed by Referee Brad Watson who lost sight of the puck. Replays show it to be valid goal that would have tied the game with 1:03 left to play. It turns out Watson was out of position to make the call.

Chris Chelios, and ya gotta love a nearly 50 year old guy who still plays hockey, needs to get off the ice. Not only is he slow and without a slapshot, he is only playing 2-10 minutes a game and causing the other guys to pick up the slack. Brian Rafalski needs to get healthy and get his butt back on the ice or it might soon be "lights out" for the Red Wings Stanley Cup hopes.
