Five Things...

... I need to do.

1- Make a home inventory. We've had two close calls with wildfires over the past five years. I think it's time to seriously get this done.

2- Knock off some more items on my 101 in 1001. I've completed 39 already in less than a year. Some items in my sights are: #14 get a back massage (March 2), #25 learn to type without looking at my fingers (I'm learning from a computer typing program) and #28 learn to speak Spanish (Okay- I'll never be fluent but I am getting much better and actually know the meanings of over 50 words).

3- Get a full physical exam (my 50th birthday is coming up this year- perfect timing).

4- Finish landscaping the backyard.

5- Make another batch of wine.

Are You Ready For Your Peek-A-Boo, See Through Airport Scan... Anyone?

TULSA — The 35-year reign of airport metal detectors began its slow descent this week in Tulsa, where for the first time some passengers are skipping metal detectors. People are instead being screened in a 9-foot-high portal with glass shields that rotate to produce vivid pictures of what is underneath passengers' clothing.
The machines use electromagnetic waves to create pictures of energy reflected off people. The metallic-looking images show outlines of private body parts and blur passengers' faces. Two Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners in a closed room near the checkpoint view the images on computer monitors and relay information on radio headsets to checkpoint screeners.

The $170,000 body scanners could be installed at airports around the USA and would close a major security loophole by detecting non-metallic weapons such as plastic and liquid explosives. TSA testing shows the body scanners excel at finding hidden items as small as a plastic button, agency spokesman Christopher White said.

Now the TSA has more questions: How quickly do the scanners operate, and do passengers like them? And will they evoke more privacy concerns from critics who say the machines take security too far, because they can show the outlines of private body parts?

As the TSA expands its test for airports in San Francisco, Miami, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque in coming weeks, it will be listening to passengers' reactions.

"They are not pornographic at all," Tulsa screener Debbie Shacklett said. "I don't look at them as people. I look at them as a thing that could have something on it."

Some passengers Thursday said they wished the TSA had posted signs near the body scanner with a reproduction of the image. "I might not have wanted to go through if I had seen that," said Susanne Nicklas of Grove, Okla. "I'm 72, and I don't have the figure I used to."

Today I am working at the Neighborhood Healthcare's Lakeside Clinic. It's about 20 miles from our house.
From Wikipedia:

Lakeside began when the land that it is on was purchased by the El Cajon Valley Land Company. It started as a resort town, based around the once renown automobile race course at Lindo Lake that Barney Oldfield made famous. It was once home to the historical Lakeside Hotel, a destination for health and relaxation reached by long day's buggy ride or train.

It has long held the title of a "cowboy town" or "rodeo town" due to the rural settings, the large percentage of ranches and the abundant horse ownership in the area. Lakeside has also been acclaimed for its almost "Mayberry" feel to it. It is home to an 8-acre (32,000 m2) permanent rodeo facility known world wide as Lakeside Rodeo grounds. What is unique about the rodeo grounds is that it is manned by a totally volunteer group and has been for over 47 years with the premise being support of the Youth of Lakeside. The proceeds from any facility rentals are donated to local youth through sports, service and education grants.

The premier rodeo of the Southern CA season is the PRCA sanctioned Lakeside Rodeo (occurs the last weekend in April annually) and it draws over 20,000 observers to the arena. The Lakeside Optimist annually host the Bulls Only Rodeo (July) at the facility and work on behalf of the local youth. Many social and service groups are very active in this town(VFW, Elks, Optimist, Soroptimist, 4H, FFA, Boys and Girls Club, Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts, Peacebuilders, PLAY, youth soccer, baseball and football teams, BMX) and the Historical Society works hard to keep the Americana feel to the Maine Street. One of the major focuses of the community has been the establishment of a River Park along the meandering river bed, where equestrians and walkers alike can enjoy pristine, safe paths and native animals can reside.

Other noticeable qualities about Lakeside are the residents' pride, deep love and respect for the rural area, and the fortunate lack of growth in any economic sector. As the years have passed, the area has also changed with diversity in ethnic make-up. Instead, many cultures have moved outward from the inner city San Diego without fear, in search of the stability that this rugged little town offers. The U.S. Navy maintains two large housing sites for military dependents in the town.

The Barona Casino is located slightly north of Lakeside (30 minutes from downtown San Diego), and is home to a restful as well as stylish hotel, a respected golf course and top of the mark buffet. The legal gambling age at the property is 18. The spokesman is singer Kenny Rogers.

Lakeside has been a choice site for filming, such as the TV series "Renegade".

Lakeside has two large reservoirs, El Capitan and San Vicente.

Whatza Dry Socket

I got asked the question: What's a dry socket?

A dry socket (or localized alveolar ostieitis) is a fairy common complication associated with tooth extraction (usually lower teeth).

It occurs when the blood clot in the tooth extraction socket is lost and the bone and it's nerves are exposed to the oral cavity. Usually caused by birth control pills, smoking, drinking through a straw, heavy exercise right after surgery to name a few.

It becomes noticed by patients after about 4-5 days after the surgery. It is an empty socket with no blood clot in it. It can be confirmed by a dentist when he feels solid bone at the bottom of the socket with a probe or when water squirted into the socket causes pain.

treatment is a sedative dressing of iodophor gauze soaked in eugenol (oil of cloves) liquid. The gauze has iodine in it to sterilize the socket of bacteria and germs. The eugenol is soothing to the bone and provides pain relief. Usually a patient will feel better soon after the dressing is placed.

The dressing may be changed after two days in place or removed all together to let the healing of the socket begin.

Put up or Shut up

It's time for wealthy Democrats to put their money where their mouth is. All those wealthy Hollywood and media types who supported and donated money to President Obama's campaign and election need to step up to the plate and create some jobs.

Led by Moveon.org founder George Soros, they all tossed bags of ca$h into Obama's election coffers. Now it's time for them to funnel that money into creating businesses and jobs to get our economy moving. I don't mean welfare money like give-aways for food banks and shelters. That's the easy way out. I mean let's get people working, off the government welfare teet and out of the unemployment lines.

If you give a man a fish you feed him today if you teach him to fish he can feed himself for a lifetime. Isn't that how the saying goes?

But the big give away----that's the easy and cheesy way out. America wasn't founded as a welfare state but as a land of opportunity. A place where everyone has the chance to be whatever they want--- through hard work. Taking the opportunity away and subjugating Americans to welfare money and handouts to live on is, in my opinion, just another way to enslave the people to their political masters (big government). When you become dependent on big government you give away your freedom to be everything God intended for you.

C'mon now... let's see what we can do to get America back into the economic game. All that talk about change- let's see it. Let's see the rich Democrats start creating jobs instead raising taxes and handing out welfare checks... for a change.

If you think I am cynical about all this "change talk" you're right. I'm a little skeptical of a plan to toss ca$h at people instead of creating meaningful work for them to do. The goal of our country in these economic times should be to create some jobs rather than create more shoppers.

What do you think?

101 in 1001-- Item # 9-- No Sweets for 25 days

Why I Chose This Goal: Empty calories are never good and sweets--- i.e. processed sugars, are loaded with empty calories. High fructose corn syrup, sucrose, glucose and plain old sugar are high on any processed foods ingredients list. Processed sugars are never good on things like kidneys, pancreas (the islets of Langerhans produce insulin) and can contribute to weight gain and type two diabetes. And of course too much sugar isn't good for your teeth!

What I Did: The easy thing was not to eat candy bars and sodas... the hard thing was checking the so-called "nutrition" bars. They are sugar bowls wrapped in oats, nuts and granola. Several times I started this only to be thwarted by forgetting the ingredients and grabbing a power bar.

Editor's Note: I am 38.6% completed in my 101 in 1001 (begun on May 1 2008 and scheduled to end on January 27, 2011)

AFCEA/ USNI West 2009 Convention

I spent the day down at the San Diego Convention Center and attended the U.S. Naval Institutes WEST 2009 session. It tuned out to be pretty interesting. Lots of defense contractors and computer systems, it also had unmanned air vehicles (UAV), unmanned submersible vehicles (USV) and even an unmanned machine gun on treads.

The most interesting thing was something called IRIS by Sarnoff Industries.

It scans the colored portion of your eye or iris using near infrared light. It can penetrate glasses, sunglasses and works from as far away as ten feet. The person doesn't even need to be looking directly at the scanner and they can process up to 30 people per minute, just walking through a metal detector like walkway.

They say every one's iris is uniquely different and cannot be altered. So each eye scan is like a fingerprint or snowflake and can ID a person. It could change the way we go through border checkpoints, airport security or even use credit cards.

The downside is that each scanning unit currently costs $20,000. The credit card companies and ATMs, who could benefit the most by eliminating ID theft and fraud, say that it costs less for their losses than it would to outfit ATMs or credit card swipers with the IRIS scanning technology.

So although it's too expensive to implement right now I think it's in our future.

PDA

Personal Digital Assistants (or PDAs) have been part of my life since the new millennium (2000). I started out with the Palm Pilot VII. They have all been wonderful ways to maintain a calendar (agenda), keep an address book (contacts) and manage a to-do list of projects.

I have also added programs like: Epocrates (a medical drug reference), World Clock (let's me know different times around the world like: Rome, Italy and Riverview, MI), Moonphase (visually let's me see when the next full moon, quarter moon, etc will be), Palm Bio (biorhythms), Food (a database to put favorite restaurants), Time (countdown timer to future events), portable scientific calculator (to figure MPG, tips, or medication dosages) and of course games to pass the time when waiting for BMO after school. Also I've added photos, an electronic book reader, and e-bible.Palm Pilot VII
My first foray into the world of PDAs. I bought my first one while living in Portugal from the Navy Exchange. It was a pretty crude black on green display with limited memory.

Palm Tungsten E
This was an upgrade from the Palm Pilot. More memory and a rechargeable battery. Synching my PDA with the computer backs up the information and allows me to enter information and addresses more easily than using the PDA will.

Samsung i-300 Smart phone.
This was my first attempt to integrate the PDA with my cellphone. Poor reception and limited memory led me to upgrading to:

Kyocera 7135 Smart phone

A nice phone, but I cracked the screen.

Palm Treo 700p

.My current cellphone/PDA = Palm Treo 700p Smart phone. I briefly owned a Treo 600 smart phone but it only lasted nine months and was replaced by the 700p. They are nearly identical from the outside. This one is pretty nice. As mentioned earlier it can access the Internet and deliver my e-mail. It has a camera and will play mp3 music. The PDA has enhanced my ability to remember things, organize my life to keep things straight and remain in contact with Karen and the kids.

Remembering the 1965 Mustang

This was one hot car. I remember the Mustangs of the late 60s and early 70s but this baby started it all. The original pony car was designed and built by Lee Iacocca at Ford and ushered in the "muscle car" era. I actually owned a Red 1965 Mustang (not this one) from from 1994-1998.

Ten ways we are coping with the down economy

As a family we're tightening our belts. Here's ten things we're doing to save resources and money.

1. Cooking and eating more meals at home.
2. As an independent worker, I am taking every available job that comes my way.
3. Putting off getting a new car for now.
4. Combining trips to save gas.
5. Shopping the sales and using coupons.
6. Eating the foods (fruits and veggies) that are "in season" for our area.
7. Saying no thanks to coffee shop coffee and brewing my own.
8. Keeping the furnace either off or set to a lower temperature. Even lower when no one is home.
9. Shutting the sprinklers off when they predict rain.
10. Limiting the amount of minutes spent in the shower.

California Smog Check

I just received the Chevy van's tag renewal notice in the mail from the DMV. With it comes the requirement to get it smog checked. I don't know if any other state besides California has to do this or not. But with four cars, it seems that every year I am going down to the smog check place to put down $50 to have a car or two hooked up to the smog machine and see if it is safe for the environment. The way our tag renewals come up it seems they arrive every other month from November to June.

So I am setting aside time tomorrow to take the Chevrolet Astro Van down to ye olde smog shop and have it tested. I learned a while ago to go to the "smog check only" places. The guys who "inspect and repair" seem to find more vehicles needing work on the smog system to pass the test than the check only guys. Funny how that happens, huh.

From the DMV:
"In order to comply with state law, the California Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR) directs a portion of the vehicles registered in Enhanced Smog Check Areas to Test-Only or Gold Shield stations. Enhanced Areas are those parts of the state with "serious", "severe", or "extreme" ozone pollution problems. Test-Only facilities are licensed Smog Check stations that, by law, are only allowed sell gas caps or to test cars; they cannot repair them. Directed Vehicles may receive their initial inspections at Gold Shield stations. Any needed repairs must be performed at a Smog Check station designated either as a Test-Repair or Gold Shield station."

101 in 1001-- Item #37-- Reconnect With Seven Old Friends

Why I chose this: Maybe it's the fact that I will be fifty years old this summer, but finding and reconnecting with some old friends seemed like a worthy goal. Seven seemed like an achievable goal and proved to be worthwhile. Throughout our lifetimes, people come in go in our lives- like actors on a stage. With all the moving around we've done ties have gotten broken and never tied back up.

What I did: I used the marvels of Al Gore's Internet and opened back up communications with seven friends from the past. although it will never be the same, it gives me comfort to know that we all still have things in common. When is my next class reunion anyway?

101 in 1001-- Item #19-- No Soda Pop 4 One Month

Why I chose this: Well since it is nothing but water, flavoring, sugar and carbonic acid it really wasn't doing me much good now was it?

What I Did: The month of January was "no soda month" for me. It turned out to be not such a big deal either. It's so much easier to sit down in a restaurant and say " no thanks, I'll just have water" and a lot less expensive, too. Health wise it knocks off 100 calories or something like that and eliminating the sugar and acids makes me feel better.

Who Looks More Ridiculous ?

Fans are fans are fans... until they come dressed up to a football game. It used to be that the Raider Nation was known for it's outlandish game day costumes. If you're judging teams by their fans enthusiasm, spirit and outfits... who wins today?
