- I was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 18, 1951 and raised by a single parent- my mom.
- I went to Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School.
- I completed a residency in Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
- At the young age of 33 I became the head of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
- In 1987 I separated the Rauch twins joined in the superior sagital sinus of the brain- the first time it had ever successfully done.
- I have received 40 honorary doctorate degrees.
- On June 19, 2008 I received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
- Recently I was the subject of a made for TV movie about my life starring Cuba Gooding Jr.
