Who Am I:
- I was born on June 1, 1637 in Laon, France.
- I came to Quebec, Canada in 1666 as a Society of Jesus missionary.
- In 1668 I was dispatched to the Midwest and worked at missions in Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Ashland, WI.
- I was extremely proficient in the native American languages especially Huron.
- Along with Father Louis Joliet, I journeyed 435 miles to the Gulf of Mexico in 1673. We were the first white men to map the northern portion of the Mississippi River.
- I contracted dysentery on that journey, died in 1675 and was buried in St. Ignace, MI.
- I have university and a city named in my honor.
