- I was born in Santa Anna, Texas on December 19, 1926.
- I played college football at the University of Texas and was selected to the all Southwest Conference Team four years in a row (1944-7).
- I played quarterback in the NFL for four teams (Chicago Bears, New York Bulldogs, Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers) from 1948-1962 (15 years).
- When I was with the Detroit Lions, we won four division titles and three championships in the 1950s. I was the last QB to lead the Lions to a championship win in 1957.
- After I was traded by the Lions in 1958, it is said that I put a curse on the team by saying "they won't win again for 50 years."

- I am still beloved in Motown even though I died over 20 years ago in December 1986.

- My Career record was: 1,814 completions for 26,768 yards, 196 TDs; 2,451 yards rushing; 372 points scored.
- I was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH in 1967.
- I was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
- In 1995, Sports Illustrated called me "the toughest QB who ever lived".
- In 1999, The Sporting News listed me as #52 on the top 100 all time greats list.
- I was known as a heavy drinker and I coined the phrase: "If I'd known I was gonna live this long, I'd have taken a lot better care of myself."
